Abstract
Cotton fabrics are mordanted by known methods in such a manner that one or more metallic mordants are fixed on some parts of the fabric, the tannate or tannates of these mordants on other parts, while yet other parts may remain unmordanted; they are then dyed with at least either one dyestuff having affinity for a metallic mordant only together with one having affinity for the tannate only, or, one dyestuff having affinity for both metallic and metal tannate mordants but in different degrees. For example, a chrome mordanted fabric may be printed with tannic acid, steamed and washed, and dyed first with a dyestuff having affinity for the tannate only, such as methylene blue, and then with a dyestuff such as Chromorhodine B having affinity for the untanned mordant only; by using a single dyestuff, such as Prune pure, having affinity for both mordants, tone-in-tone effects may be obtained. The mordanting may be effected in any convenient way and may involve dyeing, padding, printing, or the use of discharge and resist colours; colouring-matters may be applied simultaneously with the tannin or metallic mordant; the fabric may also be first prepared with b -naphthol and a suitable diazo compound added to one of the printing colours subsequently applied.
