Printing. - Coloured discharge effects on coloured grounds are obtained on cotton fabrics or yarns by first mordanting the material with a metal mordant (chromium, aluminium, or iron), then printing on a discharge colour consisting of a vat or sulphur dye, a reducing agent and a soluble citrate, tartrate, or lactate, then steaming to fix the vat or sulphur dye and discharge the mordant, washing, and finally dyeing with a mordant dye; the order of applying the mordant and discharge colour may be reversed. Or the material, after mordanting, may be prepared with #-naphthol, printed with the said discharge colour and also with diazotized p-nitraniline or other diazo compound (with or without the addition of citrates, tartrates or lactates to the diazo colour), then steamed, washed and dyed with a mordant dye; in this case also the discharge and diazo colour may be printed on before applying the mordant. Or the material may be first mordanted, then prepared with an aniline black mixture, then printed with the above discharge colour, steamed, washed, and dyed with a mordant dye.
