163,870. Peacock, J. W. April 1, 1920. Guarding against unauthorized use.-A device for locking the steering-wheel comprises a longitudinally-arranged member controlled by a permutation setting-device; the arrangement is such that the member can be moved to lock the steering-wheel without setting the permutation device, and the opposite movement, to free the steering-wheel, effects the disarrangement of the previously-set permutation mechanism. The steering-column b is locked by means of a pawl d engaging a recess in a fixed casing e and carried at the bottom of a telescopic member c splined to the steering-column. The upper part of themember c is formed as a cup having projectionsc<2> mounted on blade springs and adapted to engage projections b<2>. The projections b<2> are formed on a rotatable collar k on the steering- column. Teeth or serrations c<4> are formed on a member k<1> and co-operate with inwardlydirected projections c<5> on the cup. The device is set by means of a pointer attached to the member k<1> riding over -dials on the member k and the nave of the steering-wheel. In moving the member c to its free position, a projection c<8> is engaged by the projection c<5>, thus rotating the member k<1> and disarranging the setting.. device.
