Abstract

Cooling gases by combination of direct and indirect methods; refrigerating, compression apparatus for.-In a drying system in which the air may be passed in a closed cycle, moisture being removed by passage through cold water, the water may be cooled by a refrigerating machine, the water employed to cool the condenser supplying heat to the air used for drying. In the apparatus shown, the air drawn through the drying chamber in counter current passes out through the channel 18 provided with valves 20, 21 whereby it may be partly removed and renewed, and is forced by a blower 19 into a cooling device wherein it is cooled for example by sea water circulated by a pump 24 and cooled by a refrigerator 22; the cooled air passes back to the drying-chamber through a pipe 16 wherein is heated by tubes 17. These tubes and the heating elements 10 within the chamber are heated by the circulation of water employed in the condenser 11 of the refrigerating system. Alternatively the sea water may 'be cooled by ice, the heating system being operated independently.
