Abstract

162,118. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Feb. 6, 1920. Regulation, automatic systems and apparatus for.-Circuits are automatically regulated by means of a rotary converter having its direct current side connected to the circuit to be regulated and its alternating current side connected to devices for imposing variable reactance. The invention is described in application to the field of a generator for the purpose of maintaining constant voltage and with the employment of reactance coils, the reactance of which is controlled by direct current magnetizing windings. Fig. 1 is a diagram of one arrangement for regulating the voltage of a direct current generator 2 having a shunt field 4, by means of a rotary converter 7, a variable reactance device 10, and a vibratory variable resistance device 22. By means of the device 22, voltage variations affect the amount of current flowing through direct current magnetizing coils 14, 14<1> of the device 10, and thus impose a variable reactance upon alternating current coils 13, 13<1> connected to one side of the rotary converter 7, the other side of which is connected to the shunt field circuit of the generator. The current flowing through the shunt field is thus increased or diminished, and accordingly the voltage of the generator rises or falls to compensate for variations on the mains. In a modification for regulating the voltage of an alternating current generator, the arrangement of Fig. 1 is applied to the direct current exciter machine. In addition the vibratory resistance controller is furnished with an anti-hunting winding and a differential winding adapted to keep out the resistance in proportion to the strength of current in the exciter field. In a further modification for regulating a number of alternating current generators connected to exciter bus-bars fed by one or more exciter machines, the arrangement described above is applied to the exciter machines in common, and the responsive vibratory device, instead of acting on a resistance directly, acts as a, relay to bring a resistance controlling vibrator into and out of action.
