Abstract

211,100. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Thompson, L. W.). Feb. 10, 1923, [Convention date]. Regulation, automatic.-Relates to automatic control-systems for maintaining constant speed of a motor or constant voltage of a generator. According to the invention the machine to be controlled is mechanically coupled to an alternating current generator which, through a capacity reactance device, feeds a circuit containing a responsive vibrator or the like controlling the field of the primary machine. The means whereby the field is controlled comprise a counter-voltage motor arranged as described in Specification 139,836. The arrangement applied to constant speed control of a motor is shown in Fig. 1. The motor 1 drives an alternator 20 connected to a vibrator coil 18 through the primary of a. transformer 26 having its secondary shunted by condensers 25. The transformer is adjusted so that the effects of varying speed on the voltage of the alternator are considerably magnified in the coil 18. The magnified effects are transmitted in a compensatory direction to the field 3 of the motor 1 by means of a counter voltage motor 7 acting as a positive or negative booster to an exciter generator 4. In applying the invention to controlling the voltage of a generator, an auxiliary motor connected across the generator leads drives the alternator feeding the capacity reactance circuit, the arrangement being generally similar to that described above.
