Gases, treating with.-Preservative substances are formed in the body of artificial silk or other fabrics, the strength of which is diminished by moisture by the interaction of appropriate gaseous reagents. For example, resins are formed by the action of ozonized air or formaldehyde upon threads that have been exposed to turpentine vapour or phenol vapour respectively under reduced pressure. Volatile organic acids, such as formic or acetic acid, may be used when their presence is required.
