Abstract
Complex bodies comprising perchloric acid and another inorganic acid containing oxygen, e.g., chromic acid, phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, or boric acid, are employed as contact substances in conjunction with acetic acid during the preliminary stage or stages in the acetylation of cellulose. In one example, the cellulose is treated in acetic acid containing 0.2 per cent of perchloric acid (on the weight of the cellulose), present as a complex body comprising perchloric acid and chromic acid, and is then removed and acetylated in a mixture of acetic anhydride and benzene. In another example, cellulose is pretreated with dilute sulphuric acid, the bulk of which is then separated off, and strong acetic acid containing 0.35 per cent of barium perchlorate is added. The liquid is then removed and the cellulose acetylated in acetic anhydride and benzene.
