Abstract
156,265. Dandrieux, A. Aug. 27, 1919, [Convention date]. Pencil-sharpeners. -A machine for sharpening pencils is provided with auxiliary means rotatable with the ordinary cutters for giving varied points according to the hardness of the lead, and with means for automatically centring and clamping the pencil during the operation. A device for feeding the lead forward may also be provided. The machine, Figs. 6 and 12, comprises milling- cutters 1 mounted on axes 2 carried 'by a head 3 and a rotary ring 4, and provided with gearwheels 6 meshing with teeth 7 to cause the cutters to rotate on their axes when operated by the handle 5. A spring-pressed cone 17, Fig. 6, is carried by the pencil-holding tube 16 and bears against three balls 14 mounted in holes equally spaced apart in the periphery of the tube 16, to force them towards the centre, so that pencils of varying diameter may be centrally and securely held. The holding and centring device shown in Fig. 12 comprises fingers 38 pivoted at 39 in a box 40 mounted on the tube 16, which is provided with slots 37 through which the fingers 38 project. The box 40 is normally held against the wall 8 of the machine by a rod 41 fixed in position by a nut 42 and shoulder 43, and actuated by a spring 45 fixed to the opposite wall. When a pencil is to be inserted, a lug 48 attached to the rod 41 is drawn over towards the left against the action of the spring 45 to move the box 40 until the fingers 38, meeting the ends of the slots 37, are withdrawn from the tube 16. The pencil is inserted in the tube and the lug 48 released, and as the box 40 is drawn towards the right by the spring 45, the fingers 38 are forced by the spring-pressed abutment 50 into engagement with the pencil, which is therefore also fed forward under the continued action of the spring 45. A bent lever 22, Fig. 9, pivoted at 23, is provided on one arm with cutter-notches 21 of different angles for giving various tapers to, and acting as an abutment for, the front end of the lead when in the machine. A slot 24 in the other arm engages a pin 25 on a spring-actuated arm 26 connected to a head 28, which is formed with claws 29 to enter recesses 30 of various depths in the rotary ring 31. As shown in Fig. 10, two or more cutters 32, pivoted on axes 33 and drawn apart by a spring 34, are adjusted by a nut 35 carried by the head 28 to give the necessary point. The auxiliary sharpening-devices are held in a recess 53 in the head 3, the supporting-members thereof being attached by screws to a flattened part 57 of the head.
