Abstract
152,622. Meyer, J. M., and Henry, P. Oct. 11, 1919, [Convention date]. Spray carburettors.-A mixture of air and water is supplied to the induction pipe by a device resembling a carburettor and comprising an air inlet a<1> in which is mounted a nozzle b supplied with water by a constant-level device, and an outlet passage a<2> controlled by a suction-actuated valve g. The passage a<2> opens into the induction pipe either beyond the throttle valve, in which case the valve is arranged to be normally kept open by a spring g<2> and closed by suction, or between the carburettor and the throttle valve, in which case the valve g<2> is arranged to be normally closed by the spring. The constant-level device ::nay be formed integrally with the carburettor, and may be an ordinary float chamber or a tank d having an inlet pipe d<1> and an overflow pipe d<2>. The valve g<2> may be provided with holes g<0> to allow a slight flow of air and water at low engine speeds. The inner surface of the air inlet a<1> and the outer surface of the nozzle b may be so shaped that the annular passage formed between them is contracted at the middle opposite the nozzle orifices, and expands upwardly and downwardly. The air inlet a<1> may be adjustable relatively to the nozzle. The nozzle may consist of a fixed outer tube i, Fig. 3, provided at the upper end with a cup i<1>, and an inner adjustable tube j provided with orifices j<0> communicating with the cup i' and with a head j' which fits the top edge of the cup. By adjusting the inner tube, the size of the outlet passage between the edge of the cup i' and the head j' may be varied.
