Abstract
152,083. August, J. R. C. July 3, 1919. Tempering. - For removing metal bars and the like from furnaces to oil tanks, a collapsible platform or trough supported on a carriage is used. The carriage is provided with wheels 11 which run on rails 7 so as to permit of its being conveniently moved from furnaces 1 to oil tanks 2. The bottom of the trough is formed by two portions 3 and 4 which may be simultaneously opened by means of the bell-cranks and rods 14, 16, 18, and 19 about the pivotal rods 8, 9 so as to drop the hot ba.rs into the oil when in position over the tank, fingers 21 being provided to straighten the bars and allow them to fall in a horizontal position so as to minimize distortion. In order to cool the metal uniformly, a dipping tray 25 is provided in each tank, the dipping tray being given an oscillatory movement, in this case, by passing the suspending cords 27 over a pulley 29 eccentrically mounted on a disk 30 on a shaft 31 which is connected to a live shaft through clutch mechanism 33. The oil is circulated by means of a pump through cooling tanks 43, 44, and 45.
