Abstract

539,229. Metal-heating furnaces. ROYLE, H., MORRISON, I. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1940, No. 1546. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] In the heat treatment of tubes, rods, bars and other articles made of light alloys, a batch or batches of the articles are submitted to a preliminary cooling of at least the upper surface of the batch &c. by means of a water spray, or cold air spray with or without water vapour or a spray of other suitable liquid, such as oil, subsequent to their removal from the furnace and prior to immersion in a quenching bath. A skip 5 containing a batch of the articles to be treated is mounted on rollers 6 on a platform 7 and is moved on to rollers 9 in to the furnace 1, the door 15 being opened by the arm 11 of a coupling 10 connected to an endless cable 12 passing over pulleys 13, 13a and looped round a pulley 14 driven by an electric motor not shown. After heating in the furnace, the arm 11 is moved by the movement of the endless band 12 and draws the skip 5 out of the furnace on to the rollers 6 of the platform 7. When the skip is in the position shown, water is sprayed on to the upper articles in the skip from one or. more pipes 4 while the platform 7 with the skip is being lowered into the quenching tank by the cable mechanism 16. The supply of the water from the pipes 4 may be controlled by the movement of the platform 7 so that it is delivered as the lower members of the batch of articles comes into contact with the water in the quenching tank 3. The water in the tank 3 may be circulated to provide the maximum cooling and the water for the pipes 4 drawn from the circulating system.
