Abstract
1520802 Vapour depositing alignment layer for dichroic polarizer STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 3 Feb 1976 [10 Feb 1975] 5538/75 Heading C7F [Also in Division G2] A dichroic polarizer for a liquid crystal display device is made by evaporating an alignment layer e.g. SiO, SiO 2 , MgF 2 or Ni on to a substrate e.g. glass at an angle of incidence of # 45 degrees and then coating the layer with a layer of dicromophones e.g. metal crystallites or a dichroic dye. The dye may be applied by dipping SiO coated glass in a 3% solution of methylene blue in methanol. Alternatively a 500‹A layer of An may be co-evaporated at 90 degrees incidence with a 1500‹A layer of SiO at 5 degrees incidence. A further aligning layer may be obliquely evaporated on top of the dichroic layer.
