Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the wrong orientation, especially the induced domain, of a field-effect nematic liquid crystal display element, by using a specific polyimide- isoindoloquinazolinedione copolymer resin as an orienting film.
CONSTITUTION: The polyimide-isoindoloquinazolinedione copolymer resin, represented by the formula where Ar1 and Ar2 denote a benzene ring, Ar3 denotes a benzene ring or a diphenyl ether ring and Ar4 denotes a benzophenone ring, is produced by causing a mixture consisting of 95 to 5 % by mol of a diamine compound containing the ring shown by Ar1 and 5 to 95 % by mol of a diaminoamide compound containing the ring shown by Ar3 to react with a mixture consisting of 70 to 30 % by mol of a tetracarboxylic bianhydride containing the ring shown by Ar2 and 30 to 70 % by mol of a tetracarboxylic bianhydride containing the ring shown by Ar4. Films of said resin are coated on two glass sheets provided with transparent electroconductive films and are then rubbed thereon. The glass sheets are sealed up by glass frit. Liquid crystal is enclosed between the glass sheets.
