Abstract
1504204 Easy-open containers CONTINENTAL GROUP Inc 14 Feb 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 6290/75 Heading B8D [Also in Division B3] An easy-open can end 10 comprises an end panel 11 having a push-in tab 17 which is cut from the panel except at a minor portion defined by a score 18 partially surrounding a headed boss or rivet 40 formed in the tab whose head is larger than the distance between opposed arcuate edge portions 21<SP>1</SP> and 22<SP>1</SP> of the cut panel adjacent the score such that, on manual depression of the boss and the resultant rupture of the score, the tab is separated from the end panel but is captively retained on the can end by engagement of the boss head with edge portions 21<SP>1</SP> and 22<SP>1</SP> for pivotal movement to one side of the formed opening about an axis passing transverse of the end panel through the opening. The arcuate edge portions 21<SP>1</SP> and 22<SP>1</SP> of the cut panel define a waisted configuration preventing lateral movement of the tab on rupture of the score. The can end is made by firstly dishing the end panel at 50 and forming a boss depression 51 therein, Figs. 2a and 2b (not shown), followed by shaping the boss depression to substantially cylindrical boss form, Figs. 3a and 3b (not shown). Thereafter, a cut 54 and score 18 is made in the end panel to define the tab, the cut being made in the dishing to define an upstanding end panel edge around the tab, which edge is subsequently flattened over the tab edge to form a lapped joint, Figs. 4 and 5. Finally, the head is formed on the boss, and the can end completed by applying a sealing compound S on the underside of the panel over at least the lapped panel tab joint, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
