Abstract

1478523 Maleic anhydride or acid BASF AG 17 Oct 1974 [18 Oct 1973] 44966/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Maleic anhydride and/or acid is prepared by the oxidation of a straight-chain unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon (not less than 4 C) with oxygen or oxygen containing gas at 300-500‹ C. in the presence of a supported catalyst comprising 2-25% V 2 O 5 , 1-35% P 2 0 5 , and 40- 97% TiO 2 in which the active material in the supported catalyst is from 50 to 1500% by weight based on the carrier. The catalyst may be coated carrier spheres, 2-12 mm. diameter, with a ratio of thickness of active catalyst to carrier diameter of from 0.2 : 1 to 7.5 : 1. Examples describe the use as hydrocarbons of butene and/or butadiene mixtures using catalysts on aluminium silicate spheres.
