Abstract
1426188 Production of carboxylic acids and/or carboxylic anhydrides BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 27 June 1973 [1 July 1972] 30630/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] A carboxylic acid and/or carboxylic acid anhydride is produced by the catalytic air oxidation of an aromatic hydrocarbon at a temperature of from 350‹ to 500‹ C. using a supported catalyst. The supported catalyst is prepared by impregnating or spraying an inert carrier, e.g. 4 to 12 mm. spheres of a silicate of aluminium, zinc, zirconium or magnesium or of pumice or silicon carbide, with a solution or suspension of an aluminium compound in which the aluminium is present as a cation, e.g. aluminium nitrate, chloride, formate, acetate, sulphate or perchlorate until the aluminium content of the treated carrier amounts to 0À005 to 5% by wt. calculated as aluminium oxide, converting the compound at 300‹ to 800‹ C. into aluminium oxide, and coating the treated carrier with a catalytically active composition composing 1 to 30% by weight of vanadium pentoxide and 99 to 70% by weight of anatase, such that the overall vanadium pentoxide content of the supported catalyst amounts to less than 3% by weight. Exemplified is the conversion of naphthalene or o-xylene to phthalic anhydride.
