Abstract

1439489 Maleic anhydride STANDARD OIL CO 25 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 49781/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] In the vapour phase oxidation of n-butane with molecular oxygen to give maleic anhydride in the presence of a catalyst comprising a phosphorus-vanadium-oxygen complex, the activity of the catalyst is restored, when deactivated by use in the process, by contacting it with a reducing agent, e.g. a reducing gas (see Division B1). The reactivation may be effected periodically during the oxidation process to maintain the average vanadium valence in the catalyst in the active range of + 4.2 to + 4.6. The oxidation may be effected at 300-650‹ C., with a contact time of 0.05-5 sees. and with a feed containing 0.1-4 mole per cent butane for fixed bed operation and 1 to 20 mole per cent for fluidized bed operation. The pressure may be atmospheric or above or below. The feed may contain isobutane, butene and/or butadiene in addition to the n-butane.
