Abstract

1475978 Pile fabrics W W SEWARD 3 March 1976 08512/76 Heading D1K [Also in Division B5] A tufted carpet (Fig. 9) contains fibrous pile tufts 28 extending through and anchored to a composite including a densified batt 29, a metal foil 30 and a base fabric 31 covered by a layer 32 of displaced fibres, a latex backing 33 and a supplemental backing 34 e.g. of foamed rubber, foamed flexible polyurethane or foamed polyvinylchloride. The composite is formed (Fig. 1) by applying a continuous metal foil 12 over a web of base fabric 11, applying a non-woven batt 13 of fibres over the foil and needle punching the assembly with barbed needles 14, 15 by successively penetrating first the batt, then the foil and finally the base to force fibres from the batt back and forth through the foil and through the fabric base, the needle punching operating to densify the batt and form a plurality of mechanical interlocks to securely lock the base, the foil and the batt together, while maintaining the foil in a continuous condition to provide continuous heat conductive paths to conduct heat away from a point of application to the composite for distribution throughout the composite. The batt, and the base fabric, which may be woven or non-woven, may be in the form of a scrim or of an aligned network of filaments may be composed of natural or synthetic fibres e.g. of jute, cotton, wool, rayon, nylon, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic polymer or modified acrylic polymer or a mixture thereof. The metal foil may be of aluminium, copper or magnesium.
