Abstract

1467745 Laminates; finishing edges JOHNSON & JOHNSON 19 Aug 1976 [20 Aug 1974] 34414/75 Headings B5N and B5K [Also in Divisions A5 and D1] A disposable diaper having one fibrous layer comprises (1) a porous batt 12 composed at least primarily of cellulosic fibres less than 1/4 inch in length and (2) a water-impervious backing sheet 11 adjacent one surface of the batt and bonded thereto by adhesive at least on spaced areas of the surface, fibres of the batt being bonded together by a resinous binder covering the surface opposite the backing sheet and extending through the thickness of the batt in spaced linear zones 18. The adhesion of the batt to the backing sheet may be continuous, e.g. by application of the binder to the surface of the batt to be bonded to the backing sheet, alternatively, the adhesion may be by lines, dots or other discontinuous areas distributed throughout the area of contact or by a marginal area completely around the outer edges of the diaper or only on the side edges thereof. The batt, which may be of uniform thickness or which may be thicker on its mid-portion than at its edges, may be formed of loosely compacted fibres, e.g. wood pulp fibres, cotton linters or mixtures thereof, optionally admixed with textile length fibres, either uniformly throughout the thickness thereof or non-uniformly to provide a greater concentration of textile length fibres at the surface of the batt opposite the backing sheet. In a preferred embodiment, the batt has a densified skin 14 on the surface adjacent the backing sheet, the skin being made by lightly moistening the surface of the batt and thereafter compressing the batt between compression rollers. In the embodiment shown, the resin binder covered surface is in the form of a skin 16 carrying a series of grooves 17 aligned with the zones 18 of binder. The binder may be thermoplastic or thermosetting, may be applied as an aqueous emulsion or dispersion, e.g. a fine spray, preferably in the form of a froth or foam and may comprise a self-crosslinking latex of polyethylacrylate containing small amounts of acrylonitrile and a cross-linking monomer. The diaper may be made by applying a liquid resinous binder to a surface of the batt, compressing the batt in spaced linear zones to cause the liquid binder to move throughout the whole thickness of the batt in each zone, solidifying the binder and adhering the surface of the batt opposite the binder treated surface to the backing sheet. The preferred method of distributing the binder comprises compressing the batt between a smooth surfaced roller and a roller having ridges corresponding to the spaced linear zones.
