Abstract

1308935 Disposable diaper JOHNSON & JOHNSON 29 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969 29 Jan 1970] 46282/70 Heading A3V [Also in Division B5] A multi-layer diaper, comprises a porous facing layer 16 Fig. 1, a water-wettable bonded web of mixed short and long fibres, a porous, loosely compacted cellulosic fibrous batt 14 which has greater water-wettability than said facing layer, a paper-like densified compacted cellulosic fibrous layer 18 of higher wettability still and of high fluid retentivity being integral with the batt 14 and having attached to it a water impervious backing sheet 12. The backing sheet 12 Fig. 2 and facing layer 16 are coextensive and at the edges of the diaper are in direct contact, the batt 14 and densified layer 18 not reaching to the edges. The facing layer 16 may be folded to double thickness (Fig. 3 not shown) adjacent to the edges to give the diaper substantially uniform thickness over its whole area. Two layers of batt 14 and of the integral compacted fibrous layer 18 are used in another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown). The fibres of the facing layer 16 are bonded together by a water repellent polymeric 'bonding agent in which a surfactant is included to avoid excessive water repellency. The densified layer 18 may be either continuous or in the form of parallel strips or a grill work of densified material. Adhesive tabs (26) may be provided to fasten the diaper. Diapers of the kind described are made by moistening a surface of a highly porous loosely compacted layer of short cellulosic fibres under a nozzle 48 Fig. 10 and thereafter compressing the layer by means of calender rolls 49 to form a densified layer or skin 51 on its upper surface, applying a water repellent bonding agent and a surfactant to a fibrous layer comprising a uniform mixture of short and long fibres and drying to provide a facing layer 52 which can be supplied from a roll 54 to the lower side of the batt, to the upper side (densified layer) of which is applied a water impervious backing sheet 12, the backing sheet 12 being secured to the upper side or densified layer of the batt by means of adhesive from applicator 57. The individual diapers are cut off by cutter 61.
