Abstract

1456091 Tachogenerators WABCO WESTINGHOUSE GmbH 8 Jan 1974 [9 Jan 1973] 00854/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division H2] In a tachogenerator arrangement, a ring 3 with a toothed portion 5 is mounted on a rotating body 4, and a sensor 9 is fixed so that an element 7 is disposed adjacent a part only of the periphery of the portion 5, and the element 7 and the portion 5 project one into the other, the sensor 9 being responsive to the proximity of the element 7 to a tooth of the portion 5 to produce an output signal in dependence upon the motion of the teeth of the portion 5 past the element 7. In the vehicle wheel system shown, the ring 3 is ferro-magnetic and the element 7 is constituted by one end of an oval shaped orientable permanent magnet 11 surrounded by a coil 12 in a casing 8. The system is initially adjusted so that a satisfactory output signal can be obtained when the air-gaps 32, 33 between the element 7 and portion 5 are equal. If thereafter a displacement in the radial direction occurs the signal remains at a satisfactory level because one of the two gaps decreases as the other increases. In the arrangement of Fig. 2 (not shown), a toothed portion (25) of a ring (23) projects into an element (27) in the form of a bifurcated end of a permanent magnet (31).
