Abstract
990,993. Measuring electrically. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 19, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 32129/60. Heading G1N. An electrical signal generator for producing a signal representing speed and direction of rotation comprises two stationary Hall plates 3, 3a, disposed radially of a shaft 2 and mutually displaced by a small angle x, and a U-shaped magnet 1 secured to shaft 2 so that when the latter rotates the flux from the magnet traverses the Hall plates to produce mutually overlapping flat-topped output pulses therefrom, the output pulses from one of the Hall plates being differentiated to produce peaked pulses of opposite sign at the beginning and end of each output pulse, while the output pulses from the other Hall plate control a gating circuit to allow one of the two peaked pulses to pass to indicating or controlling means, the sign of the pulse passed being indicative of the direction of rotation of the shaft. Preferably the output pulses of the one Hall plate are squared, as by a bi-stable flip-flop circuit, before being differentiated. Two or more magnets may be symmetrically mounted around the shaft; in this case, the angle x of displacement between the Hall plates is increased by the amount of the angular displacement between the magnets.
