Abstract
1453311 Regulating IC engine fuel injection GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 30 Jan 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 4764/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division G1] A fuel injection apparatus includes an adjustable stop 55 controlling the stroke of the shuttle 52. The stop is adjusted by a three dimensional cam 76 in response to pressure in the chamber 34, the temperature in chamber 34 and either the temperature of the coolant water of the engine, Fig. 2, or temperature of the engine compartment Fig. 5 (not shown) or the temperature derived from burning combustible constituents in the exhaust gases. The pressure in chamber 34 is sensed by an evacuated bellows 71 effecting axial movement of the cam 76. The temperature of the chamber 34 is sensed by a thermostat 85 and temperature of the coolant water passing through a chamber 87 is sensed by a thermostat 86, both axial outputs of the thermostats being added and converted into a rotary output of a member 83 which rotates the cam 76. The addition mechanism, Fig. 4, comprises two sleeves 88, 89 having interengaging arms and slots 88a, 89a to permit independent axial displacement whilst being rotationally coupled. A spring 92 urges each sleeve against its respective thermostat. A respective helical slot is provided in each sleeve, one 93 co-operating with a fixed pin 94 the other 90 with a pin 91 fixed to an outer rotary sleeve 83. Axial forces applied by the thermostats causes the sleeves 88, 89 to rotate, the resultant rotation of the sleeve 83 being the algebraic sum of these rotations. The temperature parameter may be derived from the exhaust of the engine and transmitted as a heat signal as disclosed in Specification 1453312.
