Abstract

2-Hydroxynaphthalene-1-aldehydes are prepared by reacting 2-hydroxynaphthalenes with hexamethylenetetramine and formaldehyde. The process is carried out in the presence of an aliphatic carboxylic acid and a mineral acid, while the amount of waste water is reduced. The 2-hydroxynaphthalene-1-aldehyde is isolated by filtration, and the mother liquor obtained is reused in the next batch.
