Abstract

1443159 Cutting apparatus S V FOUNTAIN 14 Nov 1973 [9 Dec 1972] 56958/72 Headings B4B and B5L A tool for cutting and trimming, e.g. bevelling, sheets of material, e.g. expanded polystyrene, comprises a bed 12 having a guideway 13, and at least two stationary fixed cutting blades 17, 18 mounted on the bed in such a way that as a workpiece is moved along the bed and guided by the guideway, the workpiece is moved into engagement with each blade in succession to effect cutting and trimming operations in one movement. The cutting blade 17 is clamped to the bed by means of a plate 19 having a bent portion 19c for guarding the blade; the plate is formed with a cut-out 19a having a chamferred edge so as to smoothly separate the two parts as they are cut. The blade 18 is clamped between two plates 40, 20, the plate 20 being slidable in a groove 22 formed in the underside of the bed which may be made from wood; the plate 20 may be locked in an adjusted position by a screw 43. The plate 40 is formed with an angle portion 40a which allows a waste corner piece to pass therethrough during a bevelling operation by the blade 18. In operation, the sheet material is placed on a carriage 14 slidable on the bed and guided by a tongue 15 running in the guideway 13. Rules 28, 29 are provided for accurately locating the sheet material on the carriage. The blades may be razor blades or they may be shaped so as to provide, e.g. a curved bevelled edge.
