Abstract

1442992 Filament guide UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 Aug 1973 [2 May 1972] 20463/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division D1] A rotatable, ground, filament guide pulley is mounted on a support for free rotation about a first axis normal to the pulley's rotation axis, and the support is itself mounted for free rotation about an axis at an angle to the first axis and aligned with or below the bottom of the pulley groove. Pulley 7, e.g. of P.T.F.E., is mounted to rock about shaft 15 on support 4a, the support being mounted in bearing 19 to rock about axis 5. The device is traversed so that carbon fibre tow 2 is wound on mandrel 30. Roller axis 8 is perpendicular to shaft 15. The device is counterbalanced either so that there is no tendency for it to rotate under gravity about axis 5 or shaft 15, or so that axis 8 is horizontal. For example, movable weight 13 and adjustable bolt 22 serve to counterbalance the device about shaft 15. The portion of pulley 7 over which tow 2 runs is aligned with axis 5.
