Abstract
1440878 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gas K AOI 28 Feb 1974 [25 June 1973 28 Sept 1973] 9208/74 Heading B1W I.C. engine exhaust gas purifying apparatus comprises a cleaning chamber 1 containing at least one means 5a, 6a, for subjecting the gas to adiabatic expansion whereby its temperature is reduced, a further chamber 7a in which condensation occurs and a collection chamber 8a separated from the preceding chamber by heat-resistant multi-apertured walls 9a and containing a mass of heat resistant filter material 10, for separating from condensed moisture, solid material entrained therein, an auxiliary treatment means 14 disposed bellow the cleaning chamber comprises an expansion chamber 15, a condensation chamber 16a, 16b, a gas outlet 20 and a waste liquid outlet 22, and a waste liquid pipe 13, connecting the cleaning chamber 1 with the expansion chamber 16a. The filter 10 may be glass wool. Three similar expansion stages are provided before, the gas leaves cleaning chamber 1 via a chamber 11 containing a baffle. A filter 21 is provided at outlet 20 from the auxiliary treatment means 14. In a modification, Fig. 2, tube 22, the tank 19 in which waste liquid accummulates contains a filter layer 23 containing a neutralising substance e.g. calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. Waste liquid can be withdrawn from tank 19 through pipe 24 fitted with ionexchange resin 25. A duct 2 for cooling air is provided.
