Abstract
1429936 Fuel injection pumps SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 29. May 1973 [10 June 1972] 27231/72 Heading F1A A fuel injection pump comprises a plurality of fixed stroke plungers 15 reciprocable in respective bores 16 each having a spill port 23, and a plurality of rotory spill valves 21 each controlling the flow of fuel through a respective spill port 23, the valves 21 being axially and angularly adjustable to vary the quantity and timing of the fuel injected. The bores 16 are arranged in an in-line V configuration. The plungers 15 are reciprocable by cams 14 on a cam-shaft 13, the latter driving via gearing or belting a pulley 30 for driving the valves 21 and a centifugal adjusting device. The device comprises two pairs of weights 33 pivoted to a flange 31 fixed to the pulley 30. One pair of weights 33 has arms (40) which co-operate with a plate 39 to move axially a rod 38 against the action of an operator adjustable leaf-spring 41, the rod 38 being non-rotatably slidable in a member 34 helically splined to the pulley 30. The other pair of weights 33 has legs (37) which import axial movement to the member 34 against the action of a spring 35, the axial movement being converted by the helical spline into angular adjustment with respect to the pulley 30; This effects a change in timing. Each rotory valve 21 has an arcuate land 49 having a straight leading edge (47) and a sloping trailing edge (48) whereby axial movement changes the effective width of the land and hence the period of closure of the spill port 23. This effects a change in the quantity. A feedpump 43 delivers to a gallery 25 to which fuel spills and from which it enters the bores 16 during the suction strokes. Fuel in the gallery 25 assists springs 17 in maintaining the rollers 19 of the plunger tappets 18 in contact with the cams 14.
