Abstract

1428766 Dip-moulding catheters W OGLEY 19 Feb 1974 [22 Feb 1973] 8801/73 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions A5-A6] In a dip-moulding process, a catheter, particularly an enema tip 10, is formed by dipping a tool 20, Fig. 1, having a body 24 comprising tubular and bulbous portions 24a, 24b, and a rod 22 spaced from said body, into a liquid plastics material up to mark (30), Fig. 2 (not shown), above the bulbous portion, and then further coating the tool by dipping in liquid plastics up to a level (32), Fig. 3 (not shown), below the bulbous portion, the end of the air passage 18 in the moulding then being trimmed off and the thin portion formed by tool portion 24b turned inside out and adhered at its edges to the body portion 12 of the catheter behind the airway outlet 36 to form a balloon 14. The first and second dip plastics may be the same material, the second dip being for a longer period, or the materials may be different, e.g. different grades of polyvinyl chloride. Alternatively, the first plastics material is rubber and the second polyvinyl chloride.
