1428076 Rape seed concentrate ALFALAVEL AB and KARLSHAMNS OLJEFABRIKER AB 20 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 22338/74 Heading A2Q Seeds of Brassica (including rape seed) or Crambe abyssinica provide a protein concentrate suitable for human consumption when treated by a process comprising (a) cracking the dry seeds so as to loosen the hulls, (b) separating the kernels of the cracked seeds from the hulls, (c) inactivating myrosinases in the kernels at 80-100‹C in the presence of water, (d) leaching glucosinates and other soluble components from the kernels treated according to step (c), (e) drying the leached kernels from step (d), (f) removing oil from the dried kernels from step (e) by solvent extraction and (g) removing solvent from the extraction residue. In a particular embodiment-Fig. 3-rape seeds are cracked in mill 1 which has fluted rollers, the cracked material is sifted on vibratory sifter 2 and gravity table 3 into a hull fraction, an impure kernel fraction which is recrushed in roller mill 4, a fines fraction which is cooked to extract oil in cooker 7 and press 8 and a kernel fraction, the kernel fraction is treated with hot water at 10 to deactivate myrosinases and leached with water in vessels 11A, 12A etc, to remove glucosinates and other soluble components, the leached kernels are dried in fluidized bed drier 21, flaked in roller mill 22, cooked at 23, pressed at 24 to expel oil, crushed at 25 and extracted with hexane at 26 to remove any remaining oil and the hexaneinsoluble residue is toasted at 27 to remove solvent.
