Abstract

142,564. McRae, F. A. Feb. 7, 1919. Protecting; sinking, preventing.-The hull of a vessel of relatively broad beam converges downwards from the water line to present a sharp and deep keel. The state rooms &c. are all above the water line, and a hold for the engines &c. is provided beneath the main deck. The hull beneath the water between the external plates and the hold 17 is filled with a cementitious substance to protect against torpedo attack. The bulkheads are of hollow tubes, the spaces between being filled with material consisting of 85 per cent cork dust and 15 per cent cement, mixed with tar pitch or oil.
