Abstract
1418960 Measuring temperature and length electrically COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 15 May 1973 [16 May 1972] 23147/73 Addition to 1173438 Heading G1N A method for measuring variations of the length of a sample 6 of which the thermal expansion is to be measured includes the steps of: providing a resonant cavity 2, and supplying it with electric power at micro-wave frequency, an end of the sample being fixed to a movable top wall 8 of the cavity which is displaced relative to the other walls of the cavity by expansion of the sample; measuring the frequencies of a plurality of modes of resonance of the cavity, the number of modes corresponding to the number of dimensions defining the cavity e.g. for a right circular cylindrical cavity two modes are required, for a rectangular parallelopiped three modes are required, the frequencies being measured at each of a plurality of temperatures, computing the dimensions of the cavity from the measured frequencies at each temperature and determining length variations of the sample from the computed dimensions. The different temperatures are measured by thermocouples. Alternatively if the coefficient of expansion of the sample is known the change in its length may be computed from which the difference in temperature may be calculated.
