Abstract
1,197,699. Measuring displacement electrically. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Feb. 5, 1969 [Feb. 12, 1968], No.6282/69. Addition to 1, 173, 438. Heading G1N. Changes in the length of a sample 2 are measured by coupling one end to a piston 4 forming one wall of a resonant cavity 6, supplied with micro-wave signals from a reflex klystron 32. The difference between the klystron frequency and the resonant frequency of cavity 6 is sensed by a detector 22, which regulates the klystron frequency to eliminate this difference via device 36 and power supply 34. The klystron also feeds a reference cavity 20, the difference between the klystron frequency and the resonant frequency of cavity 20 being sensed by detector 104, which controls the position of a plunger 28 to eliminate this difference via a servo-loop comprising amplifier 106 and motor 108, the latter also driving a potentiometer 110 to indicate the position of piston 28, which corresponds to the position of piston 4 and hence to the length of sample 2.
