Abstract
1415544 Rotary positive-displacement machines SPERRY RAND CORP 16 Feb 1973 [17 Feb 1972] 7624/73 Heading F1F A vane-type pump or motor comprises flexible cheek plates 40 at each axial end of the rotor 36, these plates being subjected to the high pressure side of the machine over diametrically opposite zones 50 which surround high pressure ports 42 in the cheek plates and urge the cheek plates towards the respective ends of the rotor to decrease the clearance as the high pressure increases. The pump shown comprises a base 10 to which is clamped, by means of a head 20 and bolts 22, a pumping unit 24 comprising a cam ring 32 and the rotor 36 and cheek plates 40. Each plate 40 has a pair of diametrically opposed outlet ports 42 which communicate with outlet 18 in base 10 and a pair of diametrically opposed inlet ports 44 communicating with inlet 28 in a casing 26 surrounding head 20 and unit 24. Head 20 and base 10 each have a pair of zones 50 surrounding ports 42. Each zone has an apertured plate 54 which maintains a normally circular 0-ring 52 against the irregular periphery of the zone. The cheek plates 40 are each made of a layer of bronze bearing material supported by resilient steelbacking material. Auxiliary ports 46, 48, which are located radially inwardly of ports 42, 44 and communicate with the inlet and outlet respectively, serve to feed working fluid to the underside of the vanes to outwardly bias them.
