Abstract

141,346. Gray, E. E. April 5, 1919, [Convention date]. Damping-machines.-In a machine for sealing envelopes the latter are carried through the appliance by means of a relatively large drum, which has co-operating with it a flap-lifting device and a moistening roller over which the flap passes. In the construction shown, the envelopes are placed, flaps uppermost, on platform 24, Figs. 1 and 4, which is adjusted so that they are lightly pressed against the spring 28, by sliding it along the bars 26, 27. The latter may also be moved along the frame 17 to suit envelopes of various lengths. The envelopes are prevented from sagging by the arm 80 and are carried up against the stop 30 by the rotation of the drum 10 by the operator. The stop is placed in such a position along the bar 19 that it does not come in contact with the flaps; and the rubber friction band 79 coming immediately beneath it is not roughened like the remainder 34. To the bottom of the stop is attached a flexible piece of sheet metal 33, which allows one envelope 39 only at a time to pass beneath it. The flap 38, on meeting the curved lifter 36, is raised on a level with the moist roller 40, which rotates freely in the trough 41. The latter is supplied with water from the inverted glass 54 and forms part of the plate or arm 42, which can be adjusted to suit various sized flaps by means of the slot stand clamp 47. A pressure device 59, Fig. 7, ensures that the raised flap comes in contact with the roller. After moistening, the envelope is guided by the shield 74, to the receiver 62 which is supported by the movable arms 70, 71.
