1413468 Exhaust means D G MACBEAN 10 Oct 1972 [10 July 1971] 32481/71 Heading A5A The risk of explosion when exhausting a gaseous mixture from an enclosure 1 is minimised or reduced by using exhaust means in conjunction with a bifurcated duct having a first branch 7 through which gases from the bottom of the enclosure are drawn and a second branch 8 through which lighter gases from the top of the enclosure are drawn, a flame trap 6 to prevent a flash back occurring from the outer end of the exhaust means being located at the inner end of the exhaust means at or above the junction point between the branches of the duct. The exhaust means may comprise a venturi with the flame trap located at the inner end of the venturi and the gases may be drawn into the venturi and discharged to atmosphere by means of a partial vacuum created by the exhaust efflux of an air motor introduced via pipe 5 which may also operate tank cleaning equipment e.g. a high pressure water jet. Alternatively, the exhaust means comprises an axial flow fan with the flame trap located at or below the inner end of the fan which may be driven by a low pressure vane type air motor which in turn may be driven by the exhaust efflux or an air motor which also operates tank cleaning equipment.
