Abstract
1410264 Magnetic transducers; reducing wear NORTRONICS CO Inc 18 April 1973 18757/73 Heading G5R The gap 11 of a magnetic head is situated at the crest of a convex local elevation 41, 43, the remainder of the head face 49 being coated with a material 47 having a substantially greater wear resistance than core pieces 31, 35; 33, 37 and core-piece holders 17, 18, 21. In use, the crest becomes worn to just below the level of the layer 47; which thereafter limits wear, Fig. 5 (not shown). In the four-track read-after-write assembly shown, the read and the write gaps 11 are respectively situated at the crests of longitudinally-extending elevations 41, 43, and a central shielding member 16 is situated at the crest of a similar elevation 45 of lesser altitude. The elevations 41, 43, 45 are either formed by abrading a flat head surface, Fig. I (not shown), or are preformed in the core pieces. The wearresistant layer 47 is preferably an aluminium oxide/titanium dioxide ceramic material applied by a plasma flame spray process. Compositions including chrome oxide or tungsten carbide may alternatively be used. The wear-resistant layer is finally abraded and the gaps 11 exposed.
