Abstract

1408145 Welding by pressure; jointing MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 14 Aug 1972 37873/72 Headings B3R and B3V [Also in Division C7] An article, particularly a honeycombed acoustic or aircraft panel comprises two or more wrought, cast, sintered or porous metal parts joined together by at least one T-joint, butt joint, filled joint or lap joint of sintered powdered metal between continguous surfaces of the metal parts. The assembly is preferably formed by interposing a mixture of the metal powder and a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin between the parts and then heating to sinter the joint. The powder may be applied as a slurry or paste of the metal powder, resin and liquid vehicle or as a preformed green sheet of the powder resin mixture. The metal powder forming the joint is preferably the same as the parts to be joined and may be Fe, stainless steel, Ni, Co, Cu, Ti, Be, Cr or alloys of these metals. In one example a honeycomb panel is formed by joining honeycombs 18 to sheets 16 and 17 by a filled joint 19 of a metal powder resin green layer 0-25 mm. thick. The assembly is pressed together before sintering in vacuum, H 2 or cracked NH 3 .
