Abstract

1348308 Welding by pressure and fusion ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 14 June 1971 27671/71 Heading B3R A jointing material for use in joining a part of aluminium or magnesium free aluminium alloy to a part of carbon steel or stainless steel comprise a bonded multilayer body having a layer of titanium between a layer of carbon steel or stainless steel and a layer of aluminium or magnesium free aluminium alloy, the bond between the titanium layer and steel layer and between the titanium layer and aluminium layer having been formed by explosive welding. A titanium plate is explosively welded to a carbon steel plate and then an aluminium plate is explosively welded to the titanium plate, square jointing pieces are cut from the composite body and on the centre of the steel side of one piece a carbon steel rod is electrically welded and on the centre of the aluminium side an aluminium rod is argon arc welded. In another embodiment a stainless steel-titaniumaluminium composite is produced by explosive welding and from this is cut a ring to form a pipe jointing piece. A stainless steel pipe is electrically welded to the steel side and an aluminium pipe is argon arc welded to the aluminium side. Plates may be joined by the jointing material of the invention. Similar assemblies but without the interviewing titanium layers were produced for purposes of comparison. The jointing material may comprise five explosively welded layers viz carbon steel / stainless steel / titanium / aluminium / magnesium-free aluminium alloy.
