Abstract

1407574 Reciprocating pumps and motors H SCHOTTLER 30 Jan 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 04292/74 Heading F1A [Also in Division F2] A pump or motor, e.g. for a hydrostatic transmission, comprises a rotary cylinder block 30 with pairs of radial cylinders 32, 34 connected by axial passages 31 and having ball pistons 36, 38 engaging multi-lobed cam rings 50, 60 which are angularly adjustable relative to one another to vary the displacement from a maximum, in which the pistons of each pair are in phase, and zero, in which the pistons are 180 degrees put of phase, flow to and from the cylinders being controlled by a stationary pintle valve 40, as shown, or by a face valve, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprising a non- rotatable, ported valve-member engaging a ported face of the cylinder block. Relative movement of the cam rings in opposite directions is effected by a handle 74 acting via a gear 70 engaging ring gears 66, 68 keyed to the cam rings. In Figs. 3 and 3A (not shown), hydraulic balancing of the cylinder block (130) between the ported valve-member (140) and a ported housing face is effected by grooves (117a, 117b), the valve-member being biased into engagement with the block by a spring (143) and pistons (180). In a hydrostatic transmission using a pump and a motor with face valves, Fig. 5 (not shown), the ported valve-members are biased against their respective blocks by a spring (143A) and apertured pistons (180A) acting between the valve-members. An alternative hydrostatic transmission, Fig. 6 (not shown), has a motor with a single set of radial ball pistons (438) engaging a single, fixed cam ring (450).
