Abstract
1399507 Measuring length electrically MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW-BLOHM GmbH 4 Aug 1972 [7 Aug 1971 24 Aug 1971] 36527/72 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for measuring distance, e.g. for the purpose of measuring the position of a movable part in a machine tool, or, the distance between different trains on the same track, comprises an electric cable 5 with at least two equidistant parallel conductors 1 which are conductively interconnected over their whole length by a foil of low conductance, used in conjunction with a transmitting device (not shown) emitting an alternating signal of defined amplitude which is directly or inductively coupled to the cable at that distance from a receiving device to be measured. Either one of or both the transmitter and the receiver may be movable along the cable, so that the varying distance between them may be measured. The plastics insulating structure 3 may have a transverse undulation so that the line may be laid in curves. The inter-connecting foil 2, comprises plastics material having a carbon coating which may or may not be uniformly applied (i.e. including spaced intervals) so that inter-connected lines may have their impedances balanced. The transmitted signal undergoes attenuation through the cable according to a negative exponential law, which is known as the receiving device.
