Abstract

1394830 Pistons HEPWORTH & GRANDAGE Ltd 27 Oct 1972 [27 Aug 1971] 40393/71 Heading F2T In a light metal piston comprising a crown 10 and a skirt 12 having expansion-controlling inserts of steel or other material having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than that of the light metal, each insert comprises parallely spaced upper and lower bands 18 and 19 respectively which extend at least part of the way around the interior of the skirt from a gudgeon pin boss 13 and are joined in the region of the boss by a connecting portion 20. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bands bear against abutment 22 cast on the interior of the skirt and the portions 20 are connected together by a further portion 21 of the insert on the side of the boss 13 remote from the crown 10. The axis 23 of the gudgeon pin bores 14 is offset from the piston axis 24 towards the thrust face 16 and the insert is preferably positioned symmetrically relative to a plane containing the axis 24 and parallel to the axis 23. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the upper bands (18) extend from one gudgeon pin boss to the other while the lower bands bear against the abutments (22). Alternatively, the upper bands engage the abutments and the lower bands are made continuous. In a further alternative, both upper and lower bands are continuous. In another modification. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the portion (21) is on the side of the gudgeon pin boss near the crown.
