Abstract

1292807 Pistons ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 16 Jan 1970 [16 Jan 1969] 2685/69 Heading F2T A light metal piston has a ferrous insert 11 which separates the head 17 from the skirt 19 in the thrust and/or non-thrust regions. The insert 11 comprises segmental portions 12 which in the thrust and non-thrust regions extend between and abut both the head and the skirt and are interconnected by cranked struts 15 anchored in the gudgeon pin bosses 18. Each portion 12 has a flange 13 extending downwardly and engaging the inner surface of the skirt and one or both faces of the portions 12 may be so treated before casting that there is no adhesion between the said face or faces and the light metal. The insert may be of cast iron and since it has a lower coefficient of thermal-expansion than the light metal, it acts to control the skirt expansion during use. The ends of the slots formed between the head and the skirt by the portions 12 have downwardly extending slots 21.
