Abstract

1,029,259. Casting composite pistons. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 18, 1965 [March 20 1964 (2)], No. 11465/65. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F2] A piston head 12 and skirt 32, 33 are cast of aluminium alloy and connected by steel plates 41 which are inserted into the mould, perforations 48 being provided in these plates for anchoring purposes. The plates 41 connect the skirts together and to the gudgeon pin bosses 18 which form part of the head 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the inner surfaces of the skirt are lined with steel plate and the head and skirt are cast in one piece, a crack 151 being formed between the head and skirt as a result of the differing rates of contraction upon cooling.
