Abstract

1391909 Refractory magnesia and compositions STEETLEY (MFG) Ltd 4 Aug 1972 37960/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] A dead-burned magnesia contains from 0À1% to 2À0% by weight of silica (SiO 2 ), sufficient lime (CaO) to ensure that substantially all the silica is present as dicalcium silicate but at least 0À5% by weight of lime, up to 0À5% by weight of Al 2 O 3 , less than 1À8% by weight of Fe 2 O 3 and less than 0À06% by weight of B 2 O 3 , and has a particle size distribution such that from 50-70% bywt. passes through a 5 BSS mesh and is retained by a 72 BSS mesh and from 25-40% by wt. passes through a 72 BSS mesh, the remainder passing through a <SP>3</SP>/ 16 B22 mesh the said magnesia particles not being bonded together with a chemical bonding material. The amount by weight of lime necessary to ensure that silica in the product is present as dicalcium silicate is generally 1À87 times the weight of silica when the silica content is above 0À7% by weight, the ratio increasing to 3À2 : 1 at 0À3% silica and 6À5 : 1 at 0À1% silica. Preferably, the weight ratio of lime to silica (R) is related to the percentage by weight of silica (S) by the equation where K is from 1 to 2 and R > K. The minimum density of the dead-burned magnesia of usually 3À15 gm./cc. A refractory lining for a metallurgical furnace is produced by positioning on the inner surface of the furnace, and in the absence of a chemical bonding material, particles of the dead-burned magnesia above, and ramming the magnesia to form a rammed refractory lining for the furnace. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,361,187.
