Abstract
1382691 Making connectors AMP Inc 21 May 1973 [17 June 1972] 28483/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] To connect with the edge contacts on a printed circuit board, a connector to be mounted in a board-receiving housing comprises a resilient metal tube 1 (Fig. 1), gapped longitudinally 2 and insulated by a varnish-like material, and having cemented along its length parallel transverse wires 4, each with one or more based areas 5 plated 6 with contact metal (e.g. gold, tin) to connect to the edge contacts of the board. The wires can be applied by clipping tubes to projections at each end of a temporary former plate, round which the wire is wound in a flattened helix. After cementing in place the wires are cut suitably to leave wiring tags from one end of each bend 4: contact areas are then bared and plated. Two completed connectors may be fitted in a housing (Fig. 6) to connect to both sides of board 14. For fine pitched contacts the tubes may be deformed in shear along the gap before winding; so that after the adhesive has hardened, relaxation of shear flattens the coils. Expansion of the tape before winding can ensure that on relaxation the C-shaped turns are stuck to the tube over more than a semicircle, allowing diametrically opposed contact points.
