Abstract
1343451 Making electrical connectors PLESSEY CO Ltd 18 Feb 1972 [12 March 1971] 6791/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] Each contact 4, 5 of a row is connected to the corresponding contact 17 of parallel row by a connector comprising a resilient insulating rod 2 and C-shaped conductive members 9a, 9b. The contacts 4, 5, 17 are on adjacent boards 11 of a plated wire memory stack. The assembly is held together by clips 15. Accurate location of the boards 11 is achieved by pins 14 entering holes in extensions 12 at the ends of the rod 2. The rod 2 may be circular or square, and may be hollow. The members 9a, 9b may be of beryllium-copper. In manufacture of the connector, a spiral of conductive material is formed on the rod 2 by selective deposition or by deposition over the whole surface followed by selective removal. Alternatively a wire coil is wound on the rod 2, adjacent turns being spaced by location in a spiral groove, as shown, or by an interlaced spiral of a second kind of wire; the wire then being fixed to the rod 2 by glue (4, Fig. 3, not shown) in channels (5) in the rod 2, by partially embedding the connector in a block (6, Fig. 4, not shown) of potting material formed in a mould (7), or by ultrasonic bonding. Adjacent turns are then separated by cutting a slot 8 through the spiral and into the rod 2 or by machining away one side of the spiral.
