Abstract

1379249 Activated iron or cobalt oxide E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 58464/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Iron or cobalt oxide for use as catalyst in hydrogenating adiponitrile to hexamethylenediamine is activated by heating to 300-600‹ C. in the presence of hydrogen at a partial pressure of 0À1-1000 p.s.i.g. and of 0À001-10% by volume of ammonia based on hydrogen or hydrogen-containing gas, until the oxygen content of the oxide has decreased to below 19% by weight. The oxide is preferably granular and may be ferric, ferroso-ferric, cobaltic or cobaltous oxide, or a mixture thereof.
