Abstract
Carbon monoxide is removed from a hydrogen containing gas such as ammonia synthesis gas by oxidation over a catalyst. Sufficient free oxygen containing gas is added to the gas mixture (which contains 0.001-3% carbon monoxide) to give an O2:CO ratio between 0.5 and 3:1. The gas mixture is then passed over a catalyst consisting of 0.01-5% by wt. of platinum and 0.001-5% by weight of one or a mixture of oxides of manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel on an inert support at a temperature between 0 DEG and 300 DEG C. and a pressure between atmospheric and 1000 p.s.i.g. The gas flow rate is between 100 and 25,000 cubic feet per hour per cubic foot of catalyst. The catalyst is prepared from a commercial platinum catalyst on a base such as alumina, silica, kieselguhr, silica gel, diatomaceous earth or a mixture of calcium carbonate and clay by impregnating with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt of the metal and hydrolysing or thermally decomposing to the oxide.
